The Completion Model

A model of how change completes, and why so much of it does not. It is still in development, and this page will change with it.

The premise

After many years in the world of transformation, we discovered that something is missing. People keep going back to the retreat, to the workshop, to the medicine journey, and the cycle never seems to end.

We looked into it and realized that no one is doing this on purpose. Something is missing in the model itself: in our understanding of what the stages of development are.

In response we created the Completion Model. It makes room for the therapy office and for the transformational retreat, and it goes beyond them, deeper into life and deeper into the process of maturation.

Three developmental stages

  • Regulation. Caring for the state of the nervous system: everything that exists underneath the personality and supports it. We first find steadiness through co-regulation, by borrowing it from another: in relationship, in establishing connection.

  • Expression. We loosen the fear, the anxiety, and the suppression. We come together to celebrate and validate what needs to be authentically expressed. Here we find a sense of freedom and play.

  • Cultivation. Moving toward maturation. We discover our place in the world, create sustainable structure and a solid sense of self, and deepen our connection and relationship to life and the mystery.

The deeper understanding

Each stage has its place, and each is necessary. They are not linear; they support one another.

Completion lies in discovering the next stage, and how it builds on the one before.

Without a foundation of regulation, expression feels like effort. And when we are suppressed, cultivation turns into pretense.

When regulation is not followed by expression, we stay fragile and wounded. When expression is not followed by cultivation, we never truly mature, and we usually fall into addiction.

We are a multitude, and our maturation requires careful understanding, consideration, and support. The model arrived to help us understand where we are, where we are stuck, what needs attending, and when something has completed and it is time to move on.

An awake human being is one who can recognize all three realms within themselves, and in that, develop a high capacity for presence.

Founders

The Completion Model was founded by Ori Zimmels and Liz Morris, out of their work with individuals and groups.
