The Playground of Judgment
Tennis is played on a tennis court. Basketball is played on a basketball court. Each court lends itself to a specific game, and each game belongs to its own playground.
This is true for many things. Scuba diving belongs to the ocean. Hang gliding belongs to the air. Mango trees grow in tropical climates, and saguaro cacti grow in the Sonoran Desert. Each activity belongs to the terrain that allows it to thrive.
Judgment, if you consider it an activity, is no different. It’s played on a specific kind of internal playground. Without that playground, it cannot be played

Conscious and Unconscious Internalization
Like seeds in soil, some things enter us and grow. For some children, music takes—whether it’s piano, violin, drumming, or producing beats on a computer. The music doesn’t just stay external; it moves inward. It becomes a source of joy and expression. It becomes part of who they are.
That is internalization.
Something comes from the outside, finds fertile ground, and begins to grow. Over time, there is no longer a distinction between the Self and the thing that was once external. The line dissolves. The music is no longer something they do—it’s something they are.

Traumatized or just Evil
Several years ago, a good friend brought up the idea of evil. This idea was foreign to me and counter to my way of thinking at the time, which was more in line with the Buddhist understanding of causes and conditions.
Being part of a healing community, the idea of evil—or of a person being evil—is usually frowned upon. The general tendency is to understand that there is really no good or evil, but rather people mistreating others, usually due to the fact that they themselves were mistreated.
This is, of course, the famous “hurt people hurt people,” which is mostly true. I believe that usually what we call “bad” is the result of being treated badly by others. So instead of labeling someone as “bad,” we say they are confused, traumatized, or hurt. This creates space for compassion, and allows either ourselves or the other person to move toward healing.

Judgment
In this day and age, it’s hard not to judge. There is so much disagreement in the air, and so many people are doing awful things to others, that escaping the art of pointing fingers and blaming seems almost impossible.
The problem with judgment, however, is that it doesn’t help—not on the street, not in politics, and not in our personal lives. Yes, we can point a finger at something, label it as bad or wrong or inappropriate, and then feel good about ourselves for a bit. But beyond that, nothing else really happens. Nothing truly changes. We like to feel righteous, and we enjoy the justification of our opinions, but the good feeling is short-lived. And then—like any good addiction—that high doesn’t last long, so we have to keep judging to get another hit.

Body Scan

The Invisible Lens
When you look through a telescope, you look through a series of one or more lenses, and these lenses magnify the night sky. Whatever you see in the night sky, the one thing you don’t see is the lens itself—because a good lens is invisible. A good lens allows for an unobstructed pass-through. You see right through it, which means that the lens itself cannot be seen, because it does not reflect back.
25. Be What you Are
A seed encased
in white lace fingers
is carried by God’s breath
across the sky.
24. Center
Once, and for two thousand years the earth was immovable. It lived at the
center of the universe, and all the heavenly bodies revolved around it. This
was at the time a truth we all shared. An unquestionable belief,
masquerading as a fact of life.
23. Devotion
Beloved! It all becomes clear!
You have danced one breath away
In perpetual foreplay…
On the edge of the orgasm
Simply so that you can love me.
Simply so that we can long
For UNION.
22. Ice Cream & Gelato
When you wake up you find the thing you want
And when you are asleep you dream of all the things that you think you want.
My daughter, if you ask her what she wants
She’ll tell you about her favorite ice cream flavor
But if you ask me what I want for her
I’ll tell you that I want her to have herself
21. Non Duality
Some people look at a tree and will say
“This tree is in the forest”
And this makes sense to them because
you can take the tree out of the forest
and the forest, as it seems remains
20. The Chess Game
Are you ready to leave the chess board behind?
The mental and emotional gymnastics have gotten exhausting.
I’ll admit I’ve really enjoyed the game.
Truly.
19. Seeking Resolution
When we can feel ourselves, live with ourselves, be with our experience
That’s when we don’t suffer. That’s when we have access to being whole.
When we can’t. When we distance ourselves from our experience
That’s when our suffering begins.
18. Circumstantial Heaven, Experiential Hell
When we get hit, we feel pain
But if no one hits us, do we feel pleasure ?
In solitary confinement, we feel very much alone
But in a room full of people, do we now not feel alone?
17. Life & Life Story
To be in your body is to be in your life
To be in your head is to be in your life story
To quiet the mind is to quiet the life story
But after you quiet the life story then what?
After that you still need to realize life.
16. The Return to Self
That thing you see when you look in the mirror
That’s not you
That’s your Self Image
15. Stay Awake With Me
Stay Awake With Me
Wild, unburdened heart!
Beloved, I am untethered and boundless.
14. Non Observational Awareness
Take a look,
and what you are looking at is never yourself
To look, is to see and define Other
The nature of observation is such
13. The Invitation
Sometimes what is known for me
For you is the unknown
This creates for us a problem
Because if I invite you into me, into my world
Then I am responsible for you.
12. Here it until you can hear it
It’s so sad when they can’t hear the music.
Can you hear it
Calling you into this present moment ?
Contemplative Shorts
Contemplative Shorts are expressions of wisdom condensed into short form, with the intention of then expanding on them through oral transmission. Each short represents a distillation of a particular subject, and the offering is to read, listen, and then to make room for a deeper considerations and contemplation. The purpose here is to bring about greater freedom and fulfillment, and to allow for our authentic self to emerge.
All are aimed at being passages towards awakening, and the discovery of our deeper truth, and the blossoming our consciousness and with that the revelation of unity and our true nature.
